Guide

Short answer: You can open a Shopify store from Azerbaijan: sign up for a trial on shopify.com, choose a plan, set up a domain and theme, and add products. The most important issue is payments. Shopify's own payment system, Shopify Payments, is not available to merchants based in Azerbaijan, so you need a third-party payment provider or a manual payment method.

Last updated: November 2026. The DevCommerce team wrote this guide using Shopify's official Help Center and pricing page. Prices are shown in different currencies by region and can change.

What is Shopify, and can you use it from Azerbaijan?

Shopify is a ready-made online store platform: hosting, themes, cart, checkout, order management and apps all live in one dashboard. You can build a store without coding. You can use it from Azerbaijan; an international card is enough to create a store and pay the subscription. The limitation is mainly on the side of accepting payments from customers.

Shopify works both for people selling their own products and for dropshipping. Sales can target the US, Europe or the Azerbaijani market. The market you choose directly shapes your payment setup, so think about it early.

What do Shopify plans actually cost per month?

Shopify's main plans are Basic, Grow and Advanced. Prices are shown in a regional currency, and the monthly amount drops if you pay yearly. On top of the subscription, budget for a domain, paid apps, a paid theme and advertising. If you do not use Shopify Payments, Shopify also charges an extra transaction fee on every sale.

In November 2026, the Shopify pricing page showed these figures for the European region (the currency and amounts in your region may differ):

PlanMonthly billingYearly billing (per month)Shopify transaction fee with a third-party provider
Basic€32€242%
Grow€92€691%
Advanced€384€2890.6%

The same page also showed a 3-day free trial and €1 per month for the first 3 months. When planning your real budget, add:

  • Domain: an annual fee that depends on the registrar.
  • Apps: most are monthly subscriptions, so install only what you need.
  • Payment provider fees: separate from Shopify's transaction fee.
  • Advertising: traffic to a new store usually comes from ads.

Does Shopify Payments work in Azerbaijan?

No. Azerbaijan is not on Shopify's official list of countries supported by Shopify Payments. The list includes the US, the UK, most EU countries, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, the UAE and others. Shopify says that if your business is not in a listed country, you need to use a third-party payment provider.

In practice, a merchant based in Azerbaijan can open a store but must set up a separate provider to accept card payments. Because you are not using Shopify Payments, the extra transaction fee from the plan table also applies. Solve this before designing the store, because a store without payments cannot sell.

How can you accept payments on Shopify from Azerbaijan?

There are three main routes: connect a third-party provider available for your store's country in Shopify's Payment providers section, use local payment gateways for the Azerbaijani market, or enable manual methods such as bank transfer or cash on delivery. Merchants with a company in a Shopify Payments country can also use Shopify Payments.

  1. Third-party providers. According to Shopify's third-party providers page, all payment methods are managed in the Payment providers area. The options shown depend on your store's country.
  2. Local gateways. For stores selling to the Azerbaijani market, we look at integrating local bank and payment systems with Shopify in /en/blogs/shopify-payment-gateways-azerbaijan-574.
  3. Manual methods. Shopify's manual payments page explains how to enable cash on delivery (COD), bank transfers and money orders. These orders stay "pending" until you receive payment.
  4. A company in another country. Some merchants register a company in a country that Shopify Payments supports. This creates extra tax and reporting obligations; we explain the US option in /en/blogs/do-you-need-a-us-llc-to-sell-on-amazon-577.

Our practical advice: define your target market first. If you sell to buyers in Azerbaijan, local card payments and cash on delivery are more realistic. If you sell to US or European buyers, you need a provider that supports the card payments those buyers know, and the store currency should match. Confirm the provider's terms in writing before you sign up.

We compare how Payoneer, PayPal, Stripe and Wise work for Azerbaijani residents in /en/blogs/payoneer-paypal-stripe-wise-azerbaijan-573. Note that Azerbaijan is not on Stripe's list of supported countries either.

How do you open a Shopify store, step by step?

After signing up, the order is: store details and address, plan, domain, theme, key pages and policies, products, payment provider, shipping settings and a test order. Do not open the store before payments and shipping are set up. You can comfortably finish these steps within a few days.

  1. Sign up: create a trial account with your email on shopify.com.
  2. Store details: enter the store name, business address, currency and time zone correctly.
  3. Plan: choose a plan and add a card before the trial ends.
  4. Domain: buy a domain through Shopify or connect an existing one.
  5. Theme: start with a free theme from the Theme Store and adjust the logo and colors.
  6. Pages: create About, Contact, shipping, returns and privacy policy pages.
  7. Products: add titles, descriptions, images, prices and variants.
  8. Payments: set up a provider or manual method under Payment providers.
  9. Shipping: define which countries you ship to and at what rates.
  10. Test: place a test order to check the full flow, then remove password protection.

How do you connect a domain?

You can set up a domain in two ways: buy it directly in the Shopify admin, or point a domain bought from another registrar to Shopify with DNS records. The first is simpler because DNS is configured automatically. The second requires adding the records Shopify shows you in your registrar's panel. Either way, Shopify provides the SSL certificate.

The domain name should be short, memorable and match your brand. For international markets, .com is the usual choice; for the Azerbaijani market, a local domain can also make sense.

How do you choose a theme and add your first product?

For a start, one of Shopify's free themes is enough: fast, mobile-friendly and supported. A paid theme makes sense only if you need a specific feature. When adding a product, fill in a clear title, a description that explains the benefit, quality images, the right price, variants and the SEO title and description.

  • Images: same size, white or simple background, several angles.
  • Description: benefit first, then features; avoid exaggerated promises.
  • Price: include product cost, shipping, provider fees, Shopify's transaction fee and ad costs.
  • SEO: fill the product page title and description with search terms.

Dropshipping or your own product?

With dropshipping, you sell without buying stock and the supplier ships to the buyer: little starting capital, but weaker control over margin and delivery. With your own product, you invest in stock, but quality, brand and margin are in your hands. Many people test with dropshipping first and move a winning product to their own brand later.

Which 3 traffic channels bring the first sales?

Traffic does not come to a new Shopify store on its own. The three channels most often used at the start are Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads, Pinterest and short-video platforms such as TikTok. On each one, test with a small budget, measure results, stop ads that do not work quickly and scale the ones that do gradually.

  1. Meta ads: precise audience targeting and fast testing.
  2. Pinterest: organic and paid traffic for visual products.
  3. Short videos: organic interest from content that shows the product in use.

Before running ads, make sure the pixel and analytics are installed, or you will not know which channel drives sales.

Is your store ready to launch? A checklist

Before opening the store to the public, walk through the buyer's whole journey yourself: from the home page to a product, the cart, checkout and the confirmation email. If payments work, shipping rates calculate correctly, policy pages are filled in and the mobile view looks right, the store is ready. A single broken step is enough to lose your first buyer.

  • A test order goes through and the confirmation email arrives.
  • The payment provider or manual method is active, with clear instructions.
  • Shipping zones and rates match your target countries.
  • Returns, shipping, privacy and contact pages are complete.
  • The domain is connected and SSL is active.
  • Pages load fast on a phone and buttons are easy to tap.
  • Analytics and the ad pixel are installed.

What mistakes do Shopify beginners make most often?

The most common mistakes are leaving payments until last, overloading the store with apps, pricing without calculating costs, leaving policy pages empty, skipping a test order and spending on ads before analytics are set up. These mistakes cost both money and time, and a simple checklist prevents most of them.

  • Decide on your payment provider before designing the store.
  • Install only the apps you really need.
  • Include Shopify's transaction fee and provider fees in your price.
  • Fill in your shipping, returns and privacy policies.
  • Place at least one test order before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a Shopify store from Azerbaijan?

Yes. An international card is enough to create a store and pay for the Shopify subscription. The main limitation is accepting payments: Shopify Payments is not available to merchants based in Azerbaijan, so you need a third-party provider or a manual payment method.

Why doesn't Shopify Payments work in Azerbaijan?

Shopify Payments is only available to businesses located in the countries on Shopify's official list, and Azerbaijan is not on it. In that case Shopify says to use a third-party payment provider, and a plan-based extra transaction fee applies.

How much does Shopify cost per month?

Prices vary by region. In November 2026, the Basic plan for Europe was shown at €32 billed monthly or €24 per month billed yearly. Also budget for a domain, apps, ads, payment provider fees and Shopify's transaction fee for third-party providers.

Can I set up cash on delivery or bank transfer on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify supports manual payment methods: cash on delivery (COD), bank transfers and money orders. You enable them under Settings, Payments. These orders stay pending until you receive payment, and then you mark them as paid.

Do I need to know how to code to open a Shopify store?

No. Shopify works with ready-made themes, a visual editor and apps, so you can build a store without writing code. Coding only becomes useful if you want custom changes to a theme. A free theme and the basic settings are enough to start.
