Guide

Last updated: November 2026. Building a Shopify store takes a few hours. For sellers in Azerbaijan, the real challenge is elsewhere: who will process your customers' card payments? This article covers the status of Shopify Payments, the local gateways with a confirmed Shopify integration, and the setup dropshipping stores selling to the US and Europe usually use. Every fact is sourced, and we say plainly what we could not verify.

Is Shopify Payments available in Azerbaijan?

No. Shopify Payments is only open to businesses in the countries on Shopify's supported list, and Azerbaijan is not on it. The list includes the US, Canada, the UK, most EU countries, the UAE, Japan, Singapore and others. For a store registered in Azerbaijan, Shopify recommends using a third-party payment provider instead.

Sources: Shopify Help Center: Supported countries and Shopify Payments requirements. Shopify requires the business to be located in a supported country, and verification may ask for ID, proof of address and business registration documents. In 2024 a Shopify staff member wrote on the community forum that Shopify Payments was not available in Azerbaijan and that a third-party provider should be used (Shopify Community, 15 Feb 2024).

What does a third-party payment gateway cost on Shopify?

When you use a third-party provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra transaction fee per order depending on your plan. According to the official pricing page, it is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. This comes on top of your provider's own processing fee.

Shopify planShopify transaction fee with a third-party provider
Basic2%
Grow1%
Advanced0.6%
Plus0.2%

Source: Shopify Pricing. Shopify's cost of Shopify Payments page explains that there is no third-party transaction fee when Shopify Payments is your only provider, while orders processed by a third-party provider are charged according to your plan. For example, on Basic a 50 USD order carries a 1 USD Shopify fee, plus the bank or gateway fee.

Which Azerbaijani payment gateways work with Shopify?

The only local solution we could confirm from an official source is Epoint, which announced its Shopify integration in 2023. For Pulpal, Millikart, Kapital Bank, AzeriCard and YIĞIM, the only Shopify integration claims we found come from third-party developers' marketing pages, with no confirmation from the banks themselves or the Shopify App Store.

MillikartCustom integration offered by a third-party developerNo official confirmation found

This table does not say these integrations do not exist, only that we could not confirm them on the banks' own pages. If you choose a local gateway, ask the bank:

  1. Is there an official Shopify app or integration? Who supports it: the bank or an outside developer?
  2. Do you accept foreign cards (US, EU)? In which currency?
  3. What legal status is required for a contract: individual entrepreneur (VÖEN) or LLC?
  4. What are the fees, settlement times and chargeback rules?
  5. Can refunds be issued from the Shopify admin?

Can you connect PayPal or Stripe to Shopify?

Not with Azerbaijani accounts. PayPal accounts in Azerbaijan can only send payments, not receive them, and Stripe does not serve businesses registered in Azerbaijan. Both are only usable through a business registered in a supported country, which is a separate legal and tax decision.

PayPal explains on its help page that accounts in some countries are send-only (PayPal Help), and Azerbaijan is not on Stripe's country list. A full comparison of payment services: /en/blogs/payoneer-paypal-stripe-wise-azerbaijan-573.

How are dropshipping stores selling to the US and Europe usually set up?

Azerbaijani sellers who charge US or European customers in dollars or euros usually register a company in a country where Shopify Payments is available, such as a US LLC. Shopify Payments, Stripe and PayPal are then connected in that company's name. The alternative is to confirm whether a local gateway accepts foreign cards.

What do foreign customers expect at checkout?

A US or European buyer usually expects to see prices in their own currency, pay with a familiar card or wallet and get a confirmation email right after paying. Redirects to an unfamiliar payment page or a last-minute switch to another currency can hurt trust. Test this when choosing a payment solution: place an order as if from abroad and walk through every step as the customer would.

One way to form a US company is Stripe Atlas: according to its official page, a one-time 500 USD, then 100 USD a year for the registered agent after the first year. How do you connect a payment provider in Shopify, step by step?

Once you have a contract with the provider, you connect it in the Shopify admin under Settings → Payments. Find the provider under "See all payment providers", install its app, enter the keys your bank gives you and run a test order. If the provider is not listed, ask the provider about integration directly.

  1. Decide your legal status. Local gateways usually require a registered business for a merchant contract. Tax side: /en/blogs/ecommerce-income-tax-azerbaijan-576.
  2. Sign with the provider. Get fees, currencies and foreign card acceptance confirmed in writing.
  3. Settings → Payments. Select the provider or install its app in the Shopify admin.
  4. Enter API keys. The bank issues them. Use test mode first if available.
  5. Place a test order. Check payment, refund and notification emails.
  6. Complete policy pages. Some providers will not activate an account without refund, shipping and privacy policies.

What should you check before running ads?

Before spending on ads, confirm that checkout works with a real card, that funds reach your bank account and that refunds work. Sending traffic to a store whose payment flow has not been fully tested wastes budget. Also check that prices display in your customers' currency.

  • Place a small real order and note when the funds arrive.
  • Issue a refund and confirm it reaches the customer's card.
  • Open checkout on a phone, since most buyers pay on mobile.
  • See what message customers get when a payment fails.

How do you calculate payment cost per order?

The payment cost of an order has three parts: the provider's fee, Shopify's third-party transaction fee and currency conversion. Shopify's share is stated exactly on its official page. The provider fee and conversion depend on your contract, so run the numbers with your own rates.

The formula is simple: payment cost = order value × (provider % + Shopify %) + fixed fee (if any) + conversion spread. On Basic the Shopify share is 2%, on Grow it is 1%. As monthly sales grow, check how a plan change affects your payment costs:

Monthly salesShopify fee on Basic (2%)Shopify fee on Grow (1%)
2,000 USD40 USD20 USD
5,000 USD100 USD50 USD
10,000 USD200 USD100 USD

This table shows only Shopify's extra fee and is illustrative. When choosing a plan, factor in the difference in monthly subscription too. Plan prices are on Shopify Pricing.

How do you reduce chargeback and fraud risk?

A chargeback is when a customer reverses a payment through their bank. The money is taken back from the seller, usually with an extra fee. The main ways to reduce the risk are clear product descriptions, tracked shipping, a transparent refund policy and manual review of suspicious orders.

  • Keep a tracking number for every order and send it to the customer.
  • State delivery times honestly on the product page and at checkout.
  • Review large orders where the billing and shipping addresses differ sharply before you ship.
  • Learn your provider's chargeback rules and the documents needed for disputes in advance.

Which route suits you?

If you sell to the Azerbaijani market, starting with a local gateway is the simplest route. If you plan to sell abroad, choose your payment setup before you build the store, because the decision affects your company structure, taxes and ad budget.

Note: this article is not legal or financial advice. Gateway terms can change, so get written confirmation from the provider before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

When will Shopify Payments launch in Azerbaijan?

Shopify has not announced a date. Azerbaijan is currently not on the Shopify Payments supported countries list. Check the official list in the Shopify Help Center for updates, and set up your store with a third-party payment provider in the meantime.

How much extra does Shopify charge with a third-party gateway?

According to Shopify's official pricing page, the extra transaction fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It is charged on every order on top of the payment provider's own processing fee.

Does Epoint work with Shopify?

Yes. Epoint announced its Shopify integration in 2023, saying Shopify merchants in Azerbaijan can accept payments through Epoint. Confirm contract terms, fees and foreign card acceptance directly with Epoint before you launch.

Can I connect an Azerbaijani PayPal account to Shopify?

No. PayPal accounts opened in Azerbaijan can only send payments and cannot receive money from sales, so they cannot be used as a payment method in a Shopify store. Look at local gateways instead.

Do I need a US company to sell abroad?

It is not mandatory, but Shopify Payments, Stripe and PayPal are only open to businesses in supported countries. The alternative is a local gateway that accepts foreign cards. Before forming a company, calculate the costs and tax obligations in both countries.
