What Is Amazon FBA? A Complete Guide for Sellers in Azerbaijan (2026)

Guide
Short answer: Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) is a program where you send your products to Amazon's fulfillment centers and Amazon picks, packs, ships, handles returns and answers customer questions for you. You focus on product selection, listings, pricing and advertising. Azerbaijan is on Amazon's list of countries accepted for seller registration.

What is Amazon FBA and how does it work?
With Amazon FBA, your inventory sits in Amazon's fulfillment network before anyone orders it. When a customer buys, Amazon staff pick the item, pack it and ship it, and Amazon also handles returns and customer service. Your job is to find the product, build a strong listing, manage stock levels and drive sales with advertising.
Amazon describes the program on its official FBA page: you enroll products in FBA, ship inventory to fulfillment centers, and Amazon fulfills the orders. Step by step:
- Product selection. Check demand, competition and margin.
- Sourcing. Agree terms with a manufacturer or wholesaler and order samples.
- Listing. Create the product page in Seller Central: title, images, bullet points, keywords.
- Inbound shipment. Label the goods and ship them to the fulfillment center Amazon assigns.
- Sales and payouts. Amazon fulfills orders, deducts its fees and pays out the balance.
What is the difference between FBA and FBM?
With FBA, Amazon stores, packs, ships and processes returns. With FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant), you do all of that yourself or through your own logistics partner. FBA is convenient and makes your offers eligible for fast Prime delivery, but it adds fulfillment and storage fees. FBM is cheaper to start, but delivery speed and control are entirely on you.
| Criterion | FBA | FBM |
|---|---|---|
| Where inventory is stored | Amazon fulfillment center | Your own location or warehouse |
| Packing and shipping | Amazon | Seller |
| Customer service and returns | Mostly Amazon | Seller |
| Fast Prime delivery | Yes | Usually no |
| Main costs | Fulfillment fees and monthly storage | Your own shipping and packaging |
| Reality when selling from Azerbaijan | Goods go straight to the warehouse, so you can run it remotely | Shipping each order from Baku to US buyers is slow and expensive |
For a seller based in Azerbaijan, FBA is usually the more practical option: goods travel from the supplier directly to Amazon, and you manage everything from Seller Central.
How much does Amazon FBA cost?
Opening an Amazon selling account is free. Costs start with the selling plan: $0.99 per item sold on the Individual plan, or $39.99 per month on the Professional plan. On top of that come category-based referral fees, FBA fulfillment fees and monthly storage fees. Product cost, inbound shipping and advertising are separate.
| Cost | What it depends on |
|---|---|
| Selling plan | Individual: $0.99 per item sold; Professional: $39.99 per month (Amazon pricing) |
| Referral fee | A percentage of the sale price by category (8–15% in many categories) or a minimum amount, whichever is greater |
| FBA fulfillment fee | The product's price, weight and dimensions |
| Storage fee | Monthly, by the volume your inventory occupies (cubic feet) |
| Shipping and customs | Supplier location, freight forwarder, import clearance |
| Advertising (PPC) | Competition in the category and your budget |
Run the numbers for each product in Amazon's Revenue Calculator. Knowing what is left after every fee is the single most important step before you buy inventory, and it is the first table we fill in with every student.
Can you start Amazon FBA from Azerbaijan?
Yes. Azerbaijan appears on Amazon's official list of countries accepted for seller registration. You need to be a resident of a listed country, have a working phone number and an internationally chargeable credit card. Amazon's registration guide also says you do not need an LLC or registered company; you can register as an individual.
Amazon's seller registration guide lists what to prepare:
- a government-issued ID (passport);
- an email address and phone number;
- an internationally chargeable credit card;
- a bank account;
- proof of address issued within the last 180 days (a bank or card statement);
- tax information (the tax interview).
The last stage of registration is identity verification: you either take a photo of your face and your ID, or join a video call with an Amazon associate. Keep your passport and proof of address ready for the call. Your details must match your documents exactly, or the review can take longer.
One important detail: Azerbaijan is not on Amazon's list of countries supported for disbursement. That is why sellers usually use foreign receiving-account details from a provider such as Payoneer. Payoneer's Amazon page explains how to add those details in Seller Central as a deposit method. Which business models work with FBA?
FBA is a logistics service, not a business model in itself. Several models run on top of it: private label (products made under your own brand), wholesale (branded goods bought from an authorized distributor) and online or retail arbitrage (buying discounted goods and reselling). Each has different capital needs, risk levels and brand-approval rules.
- Private label: your brand, your listing. Needs the most capital and time but builds long-term value.
- Wholesale: you buy existing brands from distributors. Some brands and categories require Amazon approval (ungating).
- Arbitrage: you can start small, but it is hard to scale and Amazon may ask for invoices proving where goods came from.

How is Amazon FBA different from dropshipping?
With FBA you buy stock up front and send it to Amazon, so your money is tied up in inventory. With dropshipping, you buy the item from a supplier only after it sells, and the supplier ships to the buyer. FBA needs more capital but offers fast delivery and strong buyer trust. Dropshipping starts with less money, but margins and control are lower.
People with a small budget often start with eBay dropshipping instead. We explain that model in our eBay dropshipping guide.
How do you send products to an Amazon warehouse?
You create the shipment in Seller Central: choose products, enter quantities and box details, and Amazon gives you the destination warehouse and labels. If goods enter the US from abroad, you or your broker must act as importer of record. Amazon does not act as importer of record for FBA inventory.
Amazon states this rule clearly on its import and export inventory page. In practice, sellers in Azerbaijan ship directly from a manufacturer in China or Türkiye to the US, and a freight forwarder plus a customs broker handle clearance. Amazon Global Logistics is another option with its own terms. Read the packaging and labeling requirements before shipping, or the warehouse may refuse the delivery.
What are the most common Amazon FBA mistakes?
The costliest mistakes are buying stock before calculating every fee, paying storage on slow-moving inventory, ignoring brand and intellectual property rules, putting the whole budget into one product and trusting "income statistics" that promise quick profits. A sample order and an honest cost sheet prevent most of them.
- Incomplete math: referral, FBA, storage, shipping, customs and ads must be calculated together.
- Overstocking: keep the first batch small and scale once you see sell-through.
- Restricted categories: some products need Amazon approval.
- Policy violations: fake reviews, using someone else's brand and similar actions can get an account suspended.
- No payout plan: decide how you will receive money before you open the account.
Who is Amazon FBA right for?
FBA suits people who can put a few thousand dollars of starting capital at risk and who have time for product research and working with numbers. If you need quick results or cannot absorb losses in the first months, lower-capital models such as eBay or Shopify dropshipping may be a better fit.
If Amazon is your choice, the best order is: learn the market and the fees, set up payouts, open the account, test one product in a small batch, and only then scale.
Where should you start with Amazon FBA?
Choose the model first, set up how you will get paid, and only then open the account. Next come product research, a sample order, a cost sheet and a small first batch. Sticking to that order avoids most of the expensive mistakes. Talking to a mentor or an experienced seller helps most with the very first product.
- Model: choose between private label, wholesale and arbitrage.
- Payouts: open a receiving account and check that your card works for international payments.
- Account: pick a plan and pass identity verification.
- Research: build a separate cost sheet for several product candidates.
- Samples: order samples from a few suppliers and check quality and packaging.
- First batch: create a shipment plan for a small quantity.
- Sales: optimize the listing and collect the first sales with a limited ad budget.

Frequently asked questions
What does Amazon FBA mean?
FBA stands for Fulfillment by Amazon. The seller sends products to an Amazon fulfillment center, and Amazon handles packing, shipping, returns and customer service. The seller is responsible for product selection, listings, pricing and advertising.
Can I open an Amazon FBA account from Azerbaijan?
Yes. Azerbaijan is on Amazon's list of countries accepted for seller registration. You need a passport, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account, proof of address from the last 180 days and a phone number. Sellers usually receive payouts through a service such as Payoneer.
Do I need an LLC to start Amazon FBA?
No. Amazon's official registration guide says you do not need an LLC or registered business to sell; you can register as an individual. An LLC can make banking and payments easier in some cases, but it also brings extra tax filing obligations.
How much is an Amazon selling plan?
According to Amazon's official pricing page, the Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan costs $39.99 per month. Category-based referral fees, FBA fulfillment fees and monthly storage fees come on top.
FBA or FBM: which should I choose?
For a seller based in Azerbaijan, FBA is usually more realistic, because goods travel from the supplier straight to an Amazon warehouse and you do not ship each order from Baku. FBM makes sense mainly if you have your own logistics partner in the US.
How much can you earn with Amazon FBA?
There is no reliable average. Earnings depend on the product, margin, competition, ad spend and how well you manage inventory. Calculate profit for each product separately in Amazon's Revenue Calculator after every fee is included.
